How to Check Your History on Google: Search, Browser, and Account Activity Explained

Google tracks a surprising amount of activity — but where that history lives, and how you access it, depends on which type of history you're looking for. Search history, browsing history, YouTube history, location history — these are related but separate things, each stored in different places.

Here's a clear breakdown of what exists, where to find it, and what affects what you'll actually see.

The Two Main Types of Google History

Before jumping into steps, it helps to understand the distinction between browser history and Google Account activity history — because people often confuse the two.

  • Browser history is stored locally in your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and records every website you visit.
  • Google Account activity is stored on Google's servers and is tied to your signed-in Google account — this includes searches, Maps queries, YouTube watches, Assistant interactions, and more.

You can have one without the other. If you're signed out of Google while searching, your searches won't appear in your Google Account history — but they may still appear in your browser's local history.

How to Check Your Google Search History

On Desktop

  1. Go to myactivity.google.com
  2. Sign in with your Google account if prompted
  3. You'll see a chronological feed of your activity across Google services

You can filter by date, product (Search, Maps, YouTube, etc.), or keyword. This is the most comprehensive view of what Google has logged under your account.

On Mobile (Android or iOS)

  • Open the Google app → tap your profile picture → tap Search history
  • Or go directly to myactivity.google.com in any mobile browser

On Android devices, you may also access this through Settings → Google → Manage your Google Account → Data & Privacy → My Activity.

How to Check Your Browser History in Chrome

If you're using Google Chrome — Google's browser — your browsing history is stored separately from your Google Account activity, though Chrome can sync it across devices if you're signed in.

On Desktop

  • Press Ctrl + H (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Y (Mac)
  • Or open the Chrome menu (three dots) → History → History

On Mobile (Chrome App)

  • Tap the three-dot menu → History

If Chrome sync is enabled, history from other signed-in devices may also appear here. 🔍

What Affects What Shows Up in Your History

This is where individual setups create meaningfully different results.

FactorImpact on History
Signed in vs. signed outSearches made while signed out don't appear in Google Account activity
Web & App Activity settingMust be enabled in your Google account for activity to be saved
Incognito / Private modeActivity is not saved to browser history or Google Account
Auto-delete settingsGoogle lets you auto-delete history older than 3, 18, or 36 months
Chrome Sync enabledSyncs browser history across all your signed-in devices
Device typeSteps vary slightly between iOS, Android, and desktop

If you're not seeing expected history, one of these settings is almost certainly the reason.

Checking History for Specific Google Services

Google's activity history isn't a single feed — different services have dedicated history sections.

YouTube Watch History

  • YouTube app or site → tap your profile → History
  • Or find it at myactivity.google.com filtered by YouTube

Google Maps Timeline

  • Google Maps app → tap your profile → Your Timeline
  • Shows locations visited, routes taken, and places searched (requires Location History to be on)

Google Assistant Activity

  • myactivity.google.com → filter by Assistant

Each of these can be paused or deleted independently, which is why two users with similar setups might see very different amounts of stored history. 🗂️

How History Settings Vary by Account Type

Not all Google accounts work the same way.

  • Personal Gmail accounts give you full control over activity settings through myactivity.google.com
  • Google Workspace accounts (used by schools, businesses) may have activity controls managed by the organization's admin — individual users may not be able to view or delete all history
  • Child accounts (through Google Family Link) have restricted history controls managed by the linked parent account

If you're using a managed account and can't access certain history, the settings may have been restricted at the admin level rather than something you've changed yourself.

Deleting vs. Pausing History

Two options exist that people often conflate:

  • Deleting history removes existing records — you can delete a single item, a time range, or all history for a specific product
  • Pausing activity tracking (turning off Web & App Activity) stops new history from being saved but doesn't erase what's already there

Both options are available at myactivity.google.com → Activity Controls. Auto-delete schedules can also be set here so history older than a chosen threshold is removed automatically. 🗑️

The Variable That Changes Everything

The steps above cover the mechanics clearly — but what history actually exists for you to find depends entirely on how your account is configured, which device you're using, whether sync is active, and what your organization or family settings allow.

Someone on a personal Android phone with all activity settings enabled will see a rich, multi-year log across every Google product. Someone on an iPhone using Safari, signed out of Google, with Incognito mode as a habit, may find very little recorded anywhere. The same instructions apply — but the results will look completely different.
