How to Delete Recently Played on Spotify (And What You Can Actually Control)

Spotify's Recently Played section keeps a running log of everything you've listened to — playlists, albums, artists, podcasts, and radio stations. It's useful for jumping back into something you were enjoying, but it also exposes your full listening history to anyone who glances at your screen. Whether you're sharing a device, cleaning up a cluttered library, or just want a fresh start, understanding what you can and can't delete here matters before you start tapping around.

What "Recently Played" Actually Tracks

Spotify stores two related but distinct types of listening data:

  • Recently Played items — the visual list of recently accessed playlists, albums, artists, and podcasts shown on your Home screen and in the Search tab
  • Listening history — the deeper record Spotify uses internally to power recommendations, Wrapped, and your personalized playlists like Discover Weekly

When most people ask how to delete Recently Played, they mean the visible list. But it's worth knowing that clearing that list doesn't wipe the underlying data Spotify uses for its algorithm. Those are separate systems.

How to Remove Items from Recently Played 🎵

Spotify doesn't offer a single "clear all" button for Recently Played on most platforms — this is one of the more frustrating limitations of the app. Instead, removal works item by item, and the steps differ slightly depending on your device.

On Mobile (iOS and Android)

  1. Open Spotify and go to the Home tab
  2. Scroll down to the Recently Played row
  3. Long-press on any item (album, playlist, artist, or podcast)
  4. A menu will appear — tap Remove from Recently Played

This hides that specific item from the visible list. It won't prevent Spotify from using it in its recommendation engine, but it clears it from your home screen view.

On Desktop (Windows and Mac)

The desktop app handles this slightly differently:

  1. Open Spotify desktop
  2. Look for Recently Played items in the left sidebar or on the Home page
  3. Right-click on an item
  4. Select Remove from Recently Played if available

Note: Not all item types support this option equally across platforms. Some podcast entries or radio stations may not have the remove option in older app versions. Keeping your app updated gives you the best chance of seeing consistent options.

On Smart TVs, Game Consoles, and Web Player

The Spotify web player and TV/console apps have the most limited controls. On these platforms, you generally cannot remove individual items from Recently Played — the list simply updates as you play new content, eventually pushing older items off naturally.

Controlling What Gets Added to Recently Played

If you'd rather stop certain content from appearing in the first place, Private Session is the relevant feature.

Enabling a Private Session in Spotify tells the app not to log your activity to your listening history or influence your recommendations during that session. It also prevents your followers from seeing what you're playing in real time.

To enable Private Session:

  • Mobile: Tap your profile picture → Settings → Social → toggle on Private Session
  • Desktop: Click the profile icon in the top right → Private Session

⚠️ Important: A Private Session ends automatically after a period of inactivity or when you restart the app. It is not a permanent setting. And while it stops new entries from populating your visible Recently Played and blocks social activity, it's a session-level tool — not a history-deletion tool.

Listening History vs. Recommendation Data: The Distinction That Matters

Spotify does not currently offer a way to bulk-delete your full listening history or reset your recommendation data from within the app. Third-party services and workarounds exist, but they typically work by manipulating your library — not by accessing Spotify's internal behavioral data.

Why Your Results May Vary

Several factors affect what you actually see and can do:

  • App version — Spotify rolls out UI changes gradually, so the exact menus and options can differ between users on the same platform
  • Platform — Mobile gives you the most control; smart TV and web player give you the least
  • Account type — Free and Premium accounts have the same Recently Played controls, but Premium users can access offline mode and other features that affect session behavior
  • Operating system — iOS and Android handle the long-press interaction slightly differently, and some Android manufacturers skin the OS in ways that affect gesture behavior

How much this matters to you depends heavily on why you want to clear your history. Clearing a shared device before handing it to someone else is a different concern than trying to reset your algorithm after going down a genre rabbit hole. The tools available — item-by-item removal and Private Sessions — are the same either way, but whether they're sufficient depends entirely on what you're trying to achieve. 🎧
