How to Delete Browsing History on Netflix (Watch History, Search & More)

Netflix doesn't work quite like a web browser — there's no single "clear history" button that wipes everything in one click. Instead, Netflix stores several types of activity data, each managed from a different place. Understanding what gets tracked, where it lives, and how to remove it helps you take real control of your account — whether you're tidying up recommendations, removing something embarrassing, or managing a shared profile.

What Netflix Actually Tracks

Before diving into steps, it helps to know what "history" means on Netflix. There are three main types:

  • Watch history — every title you've streamed, including partially watched content
  • Search history — recent searches made within the Netflix interface
  • Continue Watching row — titles flagged as in-progress, pulled from your watch history

Netflix uses all of this to power its recommendation engine. The more you watch (or accidentally start), the more it shapes what gets surfaced. Deleting history doesn't just clean things up visually — it also resets those personalization signals.

How to Delete Your Netflix Watch History

Watch history is managed per profile, not per account. If you share a Netflix plan with others, each profile has its own separate history. You can only manage the history on profiles you have access to.

On a Web Browser (Most Reliable Method)

  1. Go to netflix.com and sign in
  2. Select the profile you want to manage
  3. Hover over your profile icon (top right) and click Account
  4. Scroll down to the Profile & Parental Controls section
  5. Click the arrow next to the profile you want to edit
  6. Find Viewing Activity and click View
  7. You'll see a full list of everything watched on that profile

From here you have two options:

  • Remove individual titles — click the circle with a line through it (🚫) next to any title
  • Hide all — scroll to the bottom and select Hide all to remove your entire viewing history at once

⚠️ Netflix notes that it can take up to 24 hours for removed titles to stop influencing your recommendations. The changes also need time to sync across devices.

On Mobile (iOS and Android)

The Netflix mobile app doesn't currently offer a direct way to manage full viewing history. You'll need to use a mobile browser (like Chrome or Safari on your phone) and navigate to the full netflix.com site. The process is the same as the desktop steps above.

Alternatively, you can remove individual titles from the Continue Watching row directly within the app:

  1. Long-press (or tap and hold) a title in the Continue Watching row
  2. Select Remove from Row

This removes it from the visible row but doesn't delete it from your full viewing activity log. If you want it fully removed, use the Account settings via a browser.

How to Clear Netflix Search History

Netflix's search history behaves differently depending on your device and app version. On most platforms, Netflix does not offer a manual "clear search history" option the way a browser does.

What you can do:

  • Stop using a profile and create a new one — this effectively resets search data along with everything else
  • Delete and recreate a profile — this is a more drastic step, but it clears all history, ratings, and preferences associated with that profile

Some users find that search suggestions naturally update over time as Netflix refreshes its data on browsing behavior. There's no confirmed timer on how long Netflix retains search queries, and the visibility of old searches varies by device and app version.

Profile-Level vs. Account-Level Control 🎬

It's worth understanding how Netflix structures data:

Data TypeScopeWhere to Manage
Watch historyPer profileAccount settings → Viewing Activity
Continue Watching rowPer profileIn-app (remove from row) or via Viewing Activity
Search historyPer profileNo direct clear option on most platforms
Ratings & thumbsPer profileAccount settings → Ratings
Playback settingsPer profileAccount settings → Profile

If you're managing a Kids profile, note that Kids profiles have restricted account access by design. A parent or account holder with the account PIN can access and manage Kids profile activity from the main Account page.

When You Delete History, What Actually Changes?

Removing watch history has a few downstream effects worth knowing about:

  • Recommendations reset — Netflix's algorithm loses that data point and adjusts over time
  • Continue Watching clears — removed titles disappear from that row across all devices
  • "New" badge may return — some titles may appear as unwatched again in browse rows
  • Your place is lost — Netflix won't remember where you left off in a removed title

What doesn't change: your subscription, billing, saved downloads, or any other profile's data. History removal is isolated to the specific titles you delete on the specific profile you're managing.

The Variables That Affect Your Experience

How straightforward this process feels depends on a few factors: whether you're the account holder (some account management pages require it), which device you primarily use Netflix on, whether you're managing your own profile or someone else's, and whether you're looking to remove a few titles or start completely fresh.

Someone casually cleaning up their Continue Watching row has a very different task than someone who wants to fully reset a shared profile's history before passing a device to a new household member. The steps exist for both scenarios — but which path makes sense depends entirely on what you're actually trying to accomplish and how your account is currently set up.
